Trikala Attractions - Litheos River
The jewel of Trikala
Litheos River is the jewel of Trikala and its timeless symbol, since the city owes much of its natural beauty to this picturesque river. It springs from Antichasia Mountains and after a route of 36km. crosses through the city and creates two sides that are connected by 13 bridges, half of them are accessible only by pedestrians and bicycles. The main and most important bridge, built in 1888 by French engineers, connects the central square (Iroon Politechniou) of the city with the most busy street of Asklipiou and is a common meeting point for the locals. Equally important is the footbridge dedicated to the god Asclepius, where his imposing statue is located. According to the historian Strabo, Asclepius, the first doctor of antiquity was born on the banks of the Litheos. In 2015 the riverbed was cleaned along the entire length that crosses the city and was designed to be accessible to residents and visitors of the city. As Litheos has rich flora and fauna, it is ideal every season to relax on the benches in front of its shore, feeding the ducks and swans, enjoying the nature sounds under the thick shadow of the plane trees or even having a boating experience suitable for all family members.Litheos river creates unforgettable memories, despite his name which actually means oblivion (lethe).
