The Byzantine fortress of Trikala was built by Ioustinianos A', the Byzantine Emperor in the 6th century A.D. in the remains of ancient Trikki with a lot of modifications during the Ottoman occupation.

A local tradition holds that there is a secret opening at the Byzantine fortress of Trikala, which functioned as an escape route from the castle in times of hostilities. This opening was a tunnel burrowed under the perimeter wall and followed a northeasterly direction, leading eventually to the church of Virgin Mary in Kalambaka.The visitor enjoys, apart from the theatrical performances in the outdoor theater, the mesmerizing sunset and the view of the town from above drinking a hot chocolate or a breezy cocktail in summer.
